This pastel lidded jar was imitated by Tongzhi in the Republic of China. The painting method of the characters’ faces is standard from the Tongzhi period: rolling their eyes and looking blank, which is also a major feature of figure painting during the Tongzhi period. The color of this work is bright and the shape of the vessel is highly preserved. It is a rare fine folk kiln.

Qilin sending a child is a Chinese custom of praying for a child. Popular all over the country. Chinese people believe that Qilin is a beast of benevolence and righteousness and a symbol of good luck. According to popular legend, if a family has accumulated good deeds, praying to Qilin will help them have children. The popular Chinese folk legend of Qilin giving birth to a child has a long history.
